When you're hiking alone — or someone you love is — reception isn't guaranteed. I customised the IFAK Hike to cover the gap: a trauma-capable personal first aid kit built to buy you time until search and rescue arrive.

• Military trauma and haemorrhage control bandage, RAPIDSTOP packing gauze, and Slishman pressure wrap You have no spare blood, and you can't put it back in — so this kit covers major bleeds properly, not just plasters and paracetamol. The Slishman is built for Australian snake bite pressure immobilisation and major wound compression, something you won't find in a generic trail kit. • Two snake bite bandages with indicator, sodium chloride eyewash ampoules, sterile combine dressing, triangular bandage, and thermal blanket Most Australian snake bites happen on the lower limbs — two full indicator bandages give you the length to wrap tip to pit or tip to hip properly, on an adult limb, with no gaps. The thermal blanket manages shock while you wait. This is what "buying time" actually looks like.
• Trauma shears and a compact MOLLE-compatible stingray bag Small enough to live in your day pack, every hike, every time — no excuse to leave it in the car. The stingray format opens flat for fast access to everything inside, because when there's no signal and no one else around, you don't want to be digging. Knowing how to open your kit under pressure matters as much as what's in it.
• Designed by a working first aid trainer — not a warehouse This is a personal kit, built for one person to carry and use on themselves or someone else until help gets there. If you're hiking as a group, each person should carry their own — or step up to the Remote Area Survival Kit for larger groups.
