Description

Trauma shears and first aid scissors are not the same tool — and in a serious emergency, the difference matters. Standard scissors will cut gauze and tape. Trauma shears will cut through multiple layers of clothing, leather belts, and light metal like zippers and buckles in a single pass. When a defibrillator needs to be applied and every second counts, trauma shears get to the patient's chest in one motion. Scissors do not.

These 18cm Stainless Steel Trauma Shears are the tool used by paramedics, first responders, and advanced first aid officers for rapid clothing removal and patient access in cardiac arrest, trauma, and serious injury response. If your kit includes a defibrillator or is used in a high-risk or advanced first aid setting, trauma shears belong in it.

  • Cuts through clothing, leather, and light metal — standard scissors cannot Trauma shears are specifically engineered to cut through multiple layers of heavy fabric, denim, leather belts, and light metal components including zippers and buckles without stalling or requiring repositioning. In a cardiac arrest where a defibrillator pad needs to be placed on a dry, clear chest immediately, trauma shears achieve rapid clothing removal in the time it would take standard scissors to cut through a single layer. Speed of access is a clinical outcome — these shears provide it.
  • Angled blade — cuts along the body without repositioning The angled blade allows the shears to cut along the patient's body in a continuous motion without the rescuer having to reposition their hand or lift the shears away from the patient. In trauma and cardiac arrest response, uninterrupted access to the patient is the priority — the angled design keeps the shears moving along the clothing without interruption.
  • Blunt lower blade — safe against skin during rapid clothing removal The lower blade is blunt-tipped, allowing the shears to slide safely under clothing in contact with the skin without cutting the patient during rapid removal. In a trauma situation where the patient may be unconscious or unable to cooperate, the blunt lower blade is the safety feature that makes aggressive clothing removal possible without secondary injury.
  • 18cm high-grade stainless steel — durable, easy to clean, built for field use High-grade stainless steel construction withstands field conditions and repeated cleaning with antiseptic wipes or isopropyl alcohol. At 18cm, these shears provide the leverage and blade length needed for rapid clothing removal across an adult torso. Used by paramedics, first responders, event medics, and advanced first aid officers across Australia. Ships from Dubbo, NSW within 2 business days.
Trauma shears are a standard carry item for anyone working in advanced first aid, event medicine, or first response — and a recommended addition to any kit that includes a defibrillator. The 13cm sharp/blunt scissors remain the correct tool for standard dressing and bandage work — trauma shears are the escalation for serious incident response. FAQs

What is the difference between trauma shears and first aid scissors?
Trauma shears are engineered to cut through multiple layers of heavy fabric, denim, leather, and light metal components including zippers and buckles. Standard first aid scissors are designed for cutting bandages, gauze, and tape. In a serious emergency requiring rapid clothing removal — particularly cardiac arrest where a defibrillator needs to be applied immediately — trauma shears achieve access in the time it would take scissors to cut through a single layer of clothing.

When are trauma shears needed instead of standard scissors?
Trauma shears are needed when rapid clothing removal is required — cardiac arrest where a defibrillator needs to be applied, serious trauma where the injury site needs to be exposed quickly, or any situation where multiple layers of heavy clothing, belts, or buckles need to be cut through without delay. Standard scissors are appropriate for dressing preparation and bandage work — trauma shears are the tool for patient access in serious incident response.

Why does the blade angle matter on trauma shears?
The angled blade allows the shears to cut along the patient's body in a continuous motion without the rescuer repositioning their hand or lifting the shears away. In cardiac arrest and trauma response, uninterrupted clothing removal is the priority — the angled design keeps the shears moving without stopping to reposition.

Are trauma shears safe to use against the patient's skin?
Yes. The lower blade of these trauma shears is blunt-tipped, allowing them to be slid under clothing in contact with the skin and cut upward without cutting the patient. This allows aggressive, rapid clothing removal even when the patient is unconscious or unable to cooperate, without causing secondary injury.

Should trauma shears be in a kit that includes a defibrillator?
Yes. Defibrillator pads must be applied to a dry, bare chest — and in a cardiac arrest situation, rapid chest exposure is critical. Trauma shears cut through clothing, bra straps, and belt buckles in one continuous motion to achieve that access as fast as possible. Any kit that includes a defibrillator should also include trauma shears.

About Assurance First Aid Kits

It started back in 2008 when Samantha, a first aid trainer, kept getting the same question from her students: "But what kit should I actually buy?" After years of recommending products that didn't quite hit the mark, she and her partner Dan decided to build one themselves — right here in Dubbo, NSW.

Every kit is hand-assembled by Dan in our Dubbo store using 85% Australian-made components. No cheap fillers, no imported bulk packs — just quality gear that works when it matters most.

Samantha still trains, alongside Max and Neil, delivering nationally recognised first aid courses in Dubbo and surrounding areas. That real-world training experience is baked into every kit we build.

We're not a warehouse. We're not a big box retailer. We're a small Australian team who genuinely care whether you're prepared.
