Description

Some cuts are too large for a standard band-aid and not deep enough for stitches — and leaving them open increases infection risk and scarring. Butterfly wound closures bridge that gap. Applied correctly across a clean minor laceration, they draw the wound edges together and hold them in position while healing occurs, reducing the gap the tissue needs to close and improving the final result without sutures or wound glue.

Sterile, latex-free, hypoallergenic, and flexible — these are the closures included in our own sports and workplace kits for exactly this use case. A box of 10 strips at 45 x 10mm, suited to minor lacerations, facial cuts, and post-procedural wound management.

  • Draws wound edges together — reduces scarring and infection risk The butterfly shape applies tension across the wound rather than just covering it, pulling the edges into apposition and holding them while the wound closes from below. A wound held closed heals with a narrower scar and lower infection risk than one left open under a standard dressing. For facial lacerations and visible wounds particularly, the difference in outcome is meaningful.
  • Box of 10 sterile closures — 45 x 10mm 10 individually sterile strips per box. The 45 x 10mm size is the standard dimension for minor laceration closure — wide enough to bridge the wound with adequate adhesive contact on both sides, narrow enough for use on smaller wounds including face and hands. Sterile packaging maintains integrity until the moment of application.
  • Latex-free, hypoallergenic adhesive — flexible and breathable Latex-free adhesive eliminates allergy risk at the wound site. Hypoallergenic formulation reduces the risk of skin reaction around a wound that is already compromised. Flexible, breathable material moves with the skin rather than lifting at the edges — which is what keeps the wound edges together through normal activity during the healing period.
  • WHS compliant — suited to workplace, sports, and event first aid kits Butterfly closures are a required inclusion in well-equipped workplace and sports first aid kits and are listed in the contents of our Elite Sports First Aid Kit for this reason. Simple, fast, and effective for first aiders managing low-grade lacerations on-site before or instead of hospital presentation. Ships from Dubbo, NSW within 2 business days.
WHS requires first aid kits to be audited at least annually and after every incident. A used box of butterfly closures needs to be replaced before the next use — not found empty during an audit. Use our First Aid Restock Form to track what has been used and stay audit-ready. Browse the full first aid kit supplies range for individual restock items.

FAQs

What are butterfly wound closures used for?
Butterfly wound closures are adhesive strips used to draw the edges of minor lacerations together and hold them in position while the wound heals. They are used for cuts that are too large for a standard band-aid but not deep enough to require sutures — bridging the wound edges to reduce the gap the tissue needs to close, lowering infection risk and improving the scarring outcome.

What is the difference between a butterfly closure and a regular band-aid?
A standard band-aid covers a wound. A butterfly closure applies tension across the wound to draw the edges together and hold them in apposition during healing. The butterfly shape concentrates adhesive force at the wound edges rather than across the surface, making it effective for holding minor lacerations closed — something a flat band-aid cannot do.

When should I use a butterfly closure instead of seeking stitches?
Butterfly closures are appropriate for minor, shallow lacerations with clean edges that can be held together without tension. Deep wounds, wounds under significant tension, wounds on joints, wounds that will not stay closed with strips, or any wound you are uncertain about should be assessed by a medical professional. If in doubt, seek medical attention — butterfly closures are a first aid measure, not a substitute for medical care.

Are these closures latex-free?
Yes. These butterfly wound closures have a latex-free, hypoallergenic adhesive suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin and environments where latex sensitivity cannot be confirmed in advance.

How many strips come in a box?
Each box contains 10 individually sterile butterfly closures measuring 45 x 10mm. Replace the box promptly after use to keep your first aid kit compliant and ready.

Are butterfly closures required in WHS-compliant first aid kits?
Butterfly closures are a recommended inclusion in well-equipped workplace and sports first aid kits for managing minor lacerations on-site. They are included as standard in our Elite Sports First Aid Kit and are a common restock item for workplace and event first aid kits across Australia.

About Assurance First Aid Kits

It started back in 2008 when Samantha, a first aid trainer, kept getting the same question from her students: "But what kit should I actually buy?" After years of recommending products that didn't quite hit the mark, she and her partner Dan decided to build one themselves — right here in Dubbo, NSW.

Every kit is hand-assembled by Dan in our Dubbo store using 85% Australian-made components. No cheap fillers, no imported bulk packs — just quality gear that works when it matters most.

Samantha still trains, alongside Max and Neil, delivering nationally recognised first aid courses in Dubbo and surrounding areas. That real-world training experience is baked into every kit we build.

We're not a warehouse. We're not a big box retailer. We're a small Australian team who genuinely care whether you're prepared.
